Tom Grandgent's Home Page

Welcome to my little corner of the web...  The best things here are my programming projects, photos, and music, but you can take a look at the rest of this page for more info about me.

I studied Computer Science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
I'm currently working for a company that specializes in imaging toolkits and data visualization/analysis software.
Curious George I once worked for a game development company called Media Magic (whose name changed to Vipah).  I was a production assistant and eventually a programmer.
Programming! I've written a variety of programs including the Internet phone I use to videoconference with my family and the email client I've used exclusively since 1998.  My platform of choice continues to be Win32, C++, without MFC.  Some of my favorite programming areas are networking, sound processing, MIDI music, and real-time 3D graphics using Direct3D.
Pictures What home page would be complete without some pictures?  Most of these were taken with a Fuji FinePix 1400Z.  Some of the newer ones were taken with a Canon Powershot A310.
Music I love music - listening, collecting, composing, playing the piano.  I generally listen to trance, ambient, house, minimalist, and game soundtracks.  I also listen to tracked music (MOD, S3M, XM, IT, etc) and MIDI, as well as MP3s from the Scene.  And, I collect, record, encode, and occasionally remix music written for old synths like the Roland MT-32 and Sound Canvas SCC-1.  In particular, Ultima music.
Games I like many types of computer games: first-person 3D, racing, real-time strategy, role-playing, space flight-sim, retro-gaming & emulated console games.  Quite a while ago, when Quake was brand new to the world, I ran my own Quake news site called Shake N' Quake.
Currently, the games I play most frequently are Live for Speed and Team Fortress 2.
Dune Sci-fi is my favorite book and movie genre.  My all-time favorite book is Dune, by Frank Herbert.  What?  You haven't read it yet?  Buy it or borrow it from me!
I really like Japanese food.  You can see some of my favorite dishes here.
nihongo I'm studying Japanese!  I studied for two semesters at university, and now I continue to study on my own (and at an online school called JOI!).
